Hi, i havve a 10g tank that i think that needs to have a bit more colour in it. i can't have small fish like neons because the fish i currently have in their will probably kill then as they did in my freinds tank. any sugestions would be great i am also getting rid of my 3 inch leperd pleco getting to big for my tank and replacing it with cory's or a smaller pleco if possable. Also maybe getting rid or my giant danios(2) (given to me as a gift from my freind).

Hi, Caboose_122! So, currently, you have:

1 leopard pleco
2 giant danios

Is there anything else in your tank?

Thanks! :)

Ok, hopefully some more experienced members will chime in. I'm still new at this too, but there are a couple of things I do know from researching, so I'll try to help out. The rule is that you want to have no more than 1 inch of fish per gallon. So, for a 10 gallon tank, this means you can have 10 inches of fish. So, this is where you stand now:

1 Leopard Pleco: grows to 10 inches (So, you'll definitely want to re-home this fish like you mentioned)
Giant Danios: grows to 6 inches a piece (you'll definitely want to re-home these as well)
Two Tetras: currently 3/4 of an inch, but depending on the species may grow up to 2.5 inches a piece (these should be ok to keep)

Do you know what kind of tetras you have? This will definitely help in determining what future tank mates would be suitable. I'm pretty sure that most tetras are peaceful community fish, but Serpae Tetras (for example) are semi-aggressive.

At this point in time, I wouldn't recommend adding any fish until you've re-homed the Pleco and Danios. Although these fish aren't large now, they'll grow quickly and you don't want to end up in a situation where you're overstocked. Crowded fish can develop aggressive tendencies even if they don't have aggressive temperaments. Also, once you've re-homed the Pleco and Giant Danios, this will really open up your choices for you.

acctualy to be honist im not even sure they are tetras i cant remember  i have had then for a while like wise with the pleco i will try to find a picture of what they look like so you can see

this is what they are

I would get rid of the Danios as I think they get too big, ummm what do they other fish look like? If I had a empty 10g this is what I would do,

A dwarf gourami
4 cories
and a school of tetras

EDIT:Hmm the name of your other fish slip my mind

Those are called Serpae Tetras, and they can live fine in a 10 gallon. :good:

There are many fish that are small enough to live in a 10 gallon tank; many are also interesting and colourful. You should do research on the topic and see what fishes you like. :)

The 1'' per gallon is more of a guideline than an actual rule, and once you are confident in your abilities, you can increase to around 1.5'' per gallon or even a tiny bit more. But make sure you use common sense. :eek:sama:

Hi, again! Since your tetra is a Serpae tetra, it may be good to get 2-3 more Serpae tetras so that they'll school together. This can cut down on their desire to nip at the fins of other fish. Providing some hiding places and little shelters can help too. :)

well i have to officialy say i no longer have my pleco or giant danio's. and to be true i think my tank is very empty, but i cannot wait till saturday to get my new fish! :)

I'd go with lilykinloo's suggestion and get more serpas. In fact, I would make this a serpa species tank and not bother with anything else. They are schooling fish and in such a small tank, they would be quite likely to harrass other fish.
