So ultimately I wanted an underground filter with powerheads, but now I am going with sand. What kind of filter, and or powerheads should I purchase to keep my tank as clean as possible?

biological box filters are good, thats what I have, but they are incredibly space taking, otherwise just get a plain old electric filter with a sponge, they require frequent cleaning (the sponge) but i have a few in some of my tanks, your filter can also depend on the size of your fish, for instance will you be brooding fry? do they appreciate strong or weak currents? or non dependant on fish, do you find it irritating having a visible filter? unfortunately i dont rly know anything about powerheads, ;)

There is really no need to have powerheads, as your filter should be doing a good job of moving the water round.

Now what size tank do you have and would you prefer an internal or external?

i geuss you might need a powerhead if you have an external filter that trickles in (like a non-mechanical biological trickle filter,it has a good picture in aquarium fish by gina sandford and mary baily, which might be an option if he wants a bio filter but doesnt want internal and cant pump water
