I found the stuff in the pictures growing in my tank the last few days. It’s a very thin and transparent film of some kind. I would like to know if it’s algae or cyanobacteria (Blue-green, slime or smear algae) or something else. I am currently doing a fishless cycle in this tank so nitrate levels are 0 and ammonia levels are high. I’m very worried that the household ammonia I am using is not so pure and this is a side effect I’m seeing. The tank has been exposed to excess light as I left the light on over a few nights. If it is cyanobacteria, will it decrease as nitrates start to form? What are my options for removal and cure?

Sorry about the quality of the pictures and thanks for any help,

So does that mean you dont know what it is.... Or you just think it was a stupid question?

I am not really sure from your pics if it is the same but it looks a bit like the brown algae that I had when I was cycling my tank. It appeared first on the plants (i thought they were dying or had a disease) and then slight spots on the ornaments (looking a bit like rust) then it appeared on the glass. I took an ornament into the lfs with it on and they said not to worry it was brown algae. It did look a bit slimy when on the glass, but don't think it was actually slimey. I have been told since that Brown algae is often the first to appear. For me it continued to grow until I put in my Bristlenose who cleaned it up great. Don't seem to get it now that the green algae has started to grow, which was not until aftermy tank matured.

Hope you find out what it is - Good Luck :D

I seem to something like this when I first cycled my tank although it wasn't as white as yours- I just netted it out and it seemed to go away once I had fish in there. Maybe they ate it.

Skimpy - see Quote
I had a brown algae problem a while ago - now I have green algae spots appearing on this glass - can I assume this is a good thing?

Hi Liliano, I don't know for sure but I was told that getting green algae is good as it is a sign of a mature tank. Its bad if you do not like cleaning tank or having algae. But if you have a bristlenose he loves it lol
