What Is This?

I am pretty sure it is a species of Cyclocheilichthys, all if not most getting big, i think my first guess at Apogon was wrong, as pointed out, the dorsal fin is wrong, I am slowling going through all the species of Cyclocheilichthys and have found another and closer match....

They keep lumping all the species of Cyclocheilichthys onto the google images page but look at the first pics as they are the closest match to the name i put in...

Yours is most likely a male, whatever species as its not very deep in the body...

Or... Osteochilus hasseltii (Hard Lipped Barb)... again, they vary in colour a lot, but look at tinfoil barbs, same species can be silver, silver with red fins, orangey colour and so on... as can Rudd etc, also all cyprinids.

There at the bottom is a good list of suborders for you to make a start on!! Im so cross eyed from looking LOL.

I think, whatever species it is, you are looking at something from Asia/Indo areas and 20-40cm, tolerant of water temps 22-26 deg C, shoaling, needing a BIG tank....

Here in the U.S. this fish is generically known in the trade as a Sailfin Shark.

Funny really!! The ONLY website with those three photos on says "scientific name unknown to us" haha.... so we arent any better off LOL

I think... following logic... that Sailfin Sharks are also sometimes known as Sharkminnows...

Also known as Sharkminnows are Black Sharks (big and seriously nasty!!!!) and also....

Silver Sharkminnows.. aka Osteochilius hasseltii One of the ones i took a guess at earlier...

Not definate but i think thats what it is..

The pic was taken by my former boss. He co-owns a huge fish warehouse. I just thought I'd provide what little info I could about these fish. They are not very common/popular. I would sell the occasional single specimen to a fish store.I've only seen small ones, maybe up to 6 inches. MBOU, you are a retailer, right? Do you ever get these offered by your suppliers? Maybe one of them knows something about them.

THAT'S MY BABY! At least I know now he is actually a breed of fish and not a freak of nature. The common names mentioned do give one the run around leading to profiles of apollo's and bala's , etc. Any pic I have seen of adult fishes so far are not this fish, tho. With so little information available I must of course KEEP HIM AS LONG AS POSSIBLE, lol. He has decided to alternate between schooling with my african red-eyes (they seem just fine with it) and sitting on the bottom next to my algea eater. As long as he doesn't show aggression and is cute in my wifey's eyes, he is a keeper and another excuse to go to a larger tank when the financial shock of this tank has been forgotten.

He is really gorgeous!! I would assume with behaviour like that, it is fairly similar to a Siamese Flying Fox in behaviour, they alternate time between swimming about, shoaling, grazing and sitting on the bottom. A family group thing maybe.

He is certainly not a species I have ever come accross before!! But then... there is so much i dont know it scares me!

YAY! Labiobarbus festivus , i found several internet articles in russian. looks like a good commie fish, gets to about 20cm.
