Well it is obviously not a livebearer. It might be a barb of some description.

Did you buy it? or breed it?

I bought it a couple days ago, and is this odessa barb safe with swordtails or will there be nipping??

i have odessa barbs both male and female and i do not have any problems with nipping, they are in with checkered barbs ,guppies and peacock gobbies and they are all fine.

i have never had any problems with odessa barbs nipping and i have had them over a year i do have them in a group of 10 though, dont know if that makes a difference
i got them on recomendation of a friend who had them and he said they are great community fish?

They are not great community fish, I had only one and he was wrecking havoc on my swordtails i had to give him back to the LFS.

The reason for that is you only had one. Barbs naturally shoal and sort of their differences by squabbling amongst each others so a group of at least 6 (though the more the merrier) is required or they will try and exibit the same behaviour with other fish.

Odessa barbs are a vey peaceful fish, they will never bully a fish, unlike thier cousins the tiger barbs. the only reason for keeping odessa barbs in shoals is because when they are shoaling thier colors intensefies and that make them look realy pretty. Don't worry about keeping them swordtails, like I said Odessa barbs are not a fin nippers unless they are with a siamese fighting fish(Bettas) or angelfish. The odessa barbs make's a great addition to the well planted community tank, they would not harm you swordtails, if you ask me I will say that swordtails can bully them quit easily.GOOD LUCK WITH YOUR BARB. By the way you have a cute odessa barb, that's a good specimen.

Thanks
He was really cute and stood out from the rest thats why i got him, he had this cool red stripe running along his body.
If i wanted to get him tank mates, how many would be enough because i already have plenty of fish in the tank and don,t add to the bioload. would 2 more be enough?

well ummm, I think that keeping only two or three is not the best choice, maybe you should get them a new tank, or if you want to keep just two or three then that won't a BIG PROBLEM atleast you will drive the attention of the barbs away from the other fish.GOOD LUCK!!

oh ok, well i m going to try that before i do anything else. i hope 2 or 3 in a group works because i don't have space for a new tank.
