Hi all, doing a water change / gravel vac and noticed some sort of fungus growth on the underside of one of my pieces of bog wood. Any ideas what this could be or is it indeed fungus? I'll a dd pics once I can get my head around adding it.

Cheers for any help

i can't really see from the pic. Have you recently added the bogwood?
It looks like a fungus and will probably clear eventually, it should not harm your fish.

No its been in there since the tank was set up last year!! At first I (foolishly and hopefully) thought it may be eggs as they looked like a gelatinous mass when I first saw them but yeah I think its some sort of fungus.

Cheers

Is it brown? It could be algae - can't tell from the pic.

Fungus only ever grows on dead things so is actually quite harmless. When you see it on fish, it's on dead tissue or a secondary infection. You may want to remove it though anyway - just scrub it off in your kitchen sink and rinse with tap water :)

This happens with bogwood, even if it's been in a tank for years. There are always nooks & crannies than can harbour things like food particles & dead bacteria which attracts fungus. Often forms where the bogwood is in contact with the gravel. Never found it harmful to healthy fish in a tank, just lift it out and scrub it off
