Looks like Egeria densa, common pond weed. If you got it from the same place as your newts, then it would probably be ideal.

cool thanks a lot

you know anything about how to plant it and what care it needs?

It is one of the easiest of all plants to grow, will work in cold water as well as warmer, but won't do well in really high temeratures that you commonly see with Discus for example. pH is imaterial, will grow in really acidic or equally alkali conditions, hard or soft water.

Light is the key thing. In poor light, it gets long and leggy. The plant "bolts" to the surface with a long gap between the leaf pairs. The lower leaves eventually fall off and you end up with a long stem with a dozen leafs at the top.

Under better light, it grows quickly and remains leafy. Cut the top off and plant the top in your substrate and it will grow.

When planting, try not to crush the stem. If you do, it will rot and the top float free again.

thanks a lot for the info on how to plant them. I had no idea that I should cut the top off and plant that end in the substrate.
