Hi All!

I have just found one of my Balloon Dalmation Molly's (Male) with something hanging from the middle of his underside. It is bright red and is about 10mm long. At first I thought it was his 'tackle' and thought he may be after mating with one of the females, but it is still there after an hour. It looks as if some part of his insides have come out of his body or could it be some sort of parasite or maybe some sort of injury. He was fine just before this appeared. Other than this he seems to be OK, and has no other symptoms. My water stats are fine. PH 7.0, Ammonia 0, Nitrate 20.0 Nitrite 0.
The picture below is the best I could do and I hope this help.

Can any one please help me find out what is wrong with him.

Thanks.

Darren

Its called poop...........If it has been there for a long time he might be constapated, but, its poop, nothing to worry about.

Thanks for that. I feel really silly now but it's the 1st time any of my fish have been constipated!!

I really freaked out because it does not look normal to me at all.

Thanks again.

You may also want to try feeding your fish de-shelled peas, as this can help keep them from becoming constipated.

Its O.K., dont feel bad. Many people dont even think about the fact that fish poop! (Most dont want to think about it!) Feed him green peas without the shells, if he eats it, it will work as a laxative and help it all out. Dont watch when you feed them peas!

Beat me too it! Darn!

How long should it take for the poo to come away? It's now been there for almost 48 hours and has gone white and furry. He is still eating but not as much and seems to be otherwise OK.

I am beginiing to worry a little.

I had only bought this fish a few days before this happened.

Thanks again for the reply

I have just netted him and the 'white fluff' has come off, but the other stuff is still there (if not a little longer).

I did try to gently knock off what ever it is but I didn't want to stress him or cause him any pain

I have read the post as mentioned above, but as this is a male I don't think it applies unless I have mis-understood.

I really don't want to try and cut it off, I am not an expert.

I have left him in the tank with his tank mates and they don't seem to mind him being like this, he is still hanging around with his 'normal' croud doing what he has done since he went in with them.

Maybe this is just poo, if it is hopefully he will expel it.

I am keeping a very close eye on him, I guess that's all I can do.

I welcome and thank you all for your replies.

Kind regards.

Darren

Have you tried the de-shelled peas yet??

Hi,

Yes I put de-shelled peas in yesterday morning. He kept going back to them, but so did most of the other fish.

There are only very small remnants left now.

Just a quick update. This fish has died  Just before he died a lot of green and red slimey stuff was expelled and he died within seconds.

The thing was he seemed to be fine as strange as that sounds, he was swimming normally and was eating too and showed no other symptoms.

I would still like to know what this was, just in case.

Any way, thanks to all of those who took the time to post replies.

Kind Regards.

Darren

hi firstly sorry for your loss, secondly its hard to tell from the photo but if the mass was freshy it may have been a bit of bowel that prolapsed ( turned inside out and came out of the body- gross i know) if it was a prolapse there was not a lot you could do other than seek veterinary attention and even then it would probably be a hopeless case. sorry.
