So I have a 60 gallon tank.
I have a 7 inch or so bichir.. 2 large angels.. 2 gourami , 2 large tetras and 2 tiger barbs and a bala shark.
We noticed small pieces of this the other day.. looks almost like pieces for skin? Had no idea what or who it could b from.. I skimmed it out with a net.
now I just seen this is my tank... it’s everywhere!
Is this something growing in my filter?
I have a brand new marine land canister filter . Whole tank is barely a month old.. please help me!!

Looks like paper gone thru an impeller.

The only aquatic thing I have seen shed skin is ADF's. Otherwise shrimp pop out of their exoskeletons every so often.when they molt.

Oh my gosh that looks creepy. I have no freakin idea what that could be unless a fish lost some skin some how.

ya it’s super gross lookin. I do have some aquatic plants? Mainly amazon swords but I don’t kno why that would b from them :/

Don't stress I've got the same thing in my tank. It's like a slimy film that sticks to the inside of the intake and out take hoses on the canister filter. It's not harmful to the fish it just looks ugly floating around the tank. My marbled bristlenose loves munching on it for some reason lol

Is that what it is, some sort of coating coming off from inside filter housing and in the filter hose?

Have never seen that before, wonder what it truly is, some sort of biofilm from a product that’s being used and added in the tank, cheap fert or stress coat or something like that?

No idea what it's from but i can actually see it forming in the hoses and it starts to break apart and shoots out into the tank. Eventally ends up getting sucked back into the canister filter. The worst is when you turn the filter back on after a water change and the water rushing through the pipes dislodges heaps of it into the tank. Happened to me today ‍♂️

Ah so it’s from the hose itself, not the filter.

Sounds and looks like it is dried slime coat or from the lining of the hose itself of sorts.

Can you clean the hose with pipe cleaners or force a cloth through the hose with pressure of water from taps or something to help clean the hose lining otherwise might be a recurring theme perhaps, or easier yet to get new replacement hose?

Not the cheapest way I know but it’s an option.

It’s unusual but one that can be resolved one way or the other imho.

Can probably get a pipe cleaner through it but it will probably just come back. It's a pretty new filter so the hoses are only a few weeks old. This is what it looks like in the hoses.

Do you feed shrimp to anything in your tank too? Looks kinda like bits of leftover shrimp.

I got one of these to clean my canister filter hoses, works a treat :)

I was lookin at the hoses last night & I can totally see it. So weird tho. This is my first tine with a canister filter but it’s only a month old ! Looks like I’m gonna have to get some of those pipe cleaners and add another to-do on the cleaning schedule. Thank you so much for your help! I was really starting to freak out. Does not look good at all :/

I’ve never heard of that, but atleast it’s not one of the fishes being sick or anything! Just a new cleaning routine I gotta do :/
My hoses are actually still pretty long.. maybe I should trim them to help?
