Hello guys, I have been battling with a funny, icky green substance on the inside of lid in my tank for about a year, really really weird stuff, I thought it was algae at first, but It looks too runny to be algae. It's in behind the bulb mainly so it's very difficult to clean. It does come off, but I have to scrub really hard and it stinks really bad!! Heres a pic:

Thats algae, water or moisture has been getting in there and the light gives TONS of food for it so it grows easily.

Thanks saw. How doi prevent it? Its hardly attractive lol

To me it looks like your tank doesn't have a glass lid, just the hood. I have the same problem algae growing on my glass lid under the light, I scrub it off every month or so.  I don't know if your tank has the necessary bits to hold a glass lid on, but I'd be suggesting that as an interim measure. I don't know how to stop it growing without the tank suffering (less light, less rippling on the surface of the water etc).

It's just one of the questions I'm puzzling out while I design a hood for my tank.

To stop it, you would need a completely dry lid on top of your tank at all times, and if you let it sit to long it will not come off with hot water, lol ive scrubbed and scrubbed and it wont come off. Maybe viegar would work but idk.

ah. thanks for the replies guys. and I don't have anything glass apart from the tank itself lol. Just the lid in the pic.... I'll look Into the glass lid thingy then

i have the eheim aquastar 90 thr hood is the light tube and a metal mirror sort of thing my algae grows on the tube and on the metal strip just clean it as if it was algae in ur tank and keep cleaning it every time u water change its a pain but it has to be done

Maybe try not to keep your lights on for too long as this encourages algae to grow. I only have mine on for an hour or two a day and i still get crud building up, but probably less than when i had lights on for longer.
