My black mollies have recently gotten some weird thing on their heads. The top of their heads looks like there's some glitter-looing stuff. It's shiny and different colors. Has anyone ever encountered this before. I'm guessing someone out there has, or else it wouldn't have affected ALL of my black mollies. Is there something wrong, or is that just how they begin to look when they get old?

Sorry, need to clarify: I have more kinds of fish in my tank other than mollies. It was just my mollies who got this weird thing.

are you referring to molly fry by any chance? i have 7 4-week olds and i just noticed today that their heads were glittery.. at first i was scared it was ich but it doesnt look like spots. looks like exactly what you said, glitter!

My 6 week old guppy babies have it also lol I think its just the colouring of the fish ....my black gold fish had the same thing and there was nothing wrong with them....

Does anyone know why baby guppies would be rubbing their self on the rocks its only 3 of them.... or is it just because they are growing????

Hmmm... I have 4 Black Yucatan Mollies, four males and four females. The males have large splashes of orange and gold on their bodies. When I first bought them, the females were completely black, but now that they've gotten comfortable in my tank, they've begun to get a green/blue shimmer to their scales. It's really pretty. I don't see any problem with it at all, but then again I'm not an expert. But they don't seem to be sick or dying, and one actually just gave birth, so I'm guessing they are still quite healthy.

I have experienced the same thing. I noticed that for my mollies, the gills are silvery to start off with and then for some reason, the top of their head get glittery too. My last fish that got it actually died with a glittery head. I have no idea if her death is related to the glittery, but she didnt appear to have other symptoms. Right now, my other female has glittery gills. I wonder why this happens.

Thanks for your help. I won't worry about it since it seems that maybe it's just what happens to mollies.

Ooo..Thanks!

My friend's female guppy was blue and turned a half red!

yes it is a normal mollie thing like sucking on each other,
my 2 black mollies have a green/blue irridescent powder-like coloring on theri head, lol my female is looking at me and making a face that says"hey are you going to feed me or what,c'mon ill be your best friend"

Yea..... the fish are stressed and under bad conditions in lfs's so when they come home, after a lil while they'll become more awesome looking than you first saw them :) gl

The glitter on my molly's heads is so great, makes them shimmer. Such an interesting characteristic for molly fry!
