Hi all

I have a 4 inch Antenatta Lionfish and I would like to give it a little marine fish as a treat this weekend.

Any suggestions?

Pterois antennata naturally feed on shrimp and other smaller crustaceans, with fish forming a small part of their diet. A better treat would probably be some live ghost/river shrimp.

Agreed. Try and get him feeding on frozen foods as soon as you have the chance. This decreases the risk of poor nutrition from one staple food. If he is a small lion, they do eat brine shrimp or bloodworm when they are alive/swiming in the water coloum. You could try baby mollies, as they can be addapted/kept in brakish water, they last longer than normal feeders. (Feed them some marine flake before feeding them to the lion, this way they have more nutritional value).

If you give him feeders as a treat he will never be weaned off live foods.
River shrimp are ideal and are relatively inexpensive
They will do just as well on whitebait/frozen prawns/mussels

I tried some cocktail shrimp this morning and he went for it and then spat it out. I think he realised it wasn't alive.

I want to wiggle some food in front of him so it makes him want to eat but I'm scared he could hurt himself on whatever implement I use to feed him.

Would a piece of shrimp tied to some thread be good idea? I'm think of just threading the shrimp that way I can make it wiggle in front of him and then it can slip of when he goes for it.

I use chopsticks. Designed for children, they are food safe, long, and easy to handle. :good:

Smallest feeders I know of being available out side of rotifers, copepods, and baby brine shrimp, are the white shrimp whose fry is sold at a size of 1mm. There are some pretty small feeders around.

I'd second the food stick or the chopstick for the lion.
