I just purchased a 80 gallon tank and have a basic tropical community planned for it. I am looking for the quiestest filter available since it will be located in a small room. I want to do this right so taking my time doing a lot of planning with setting it all up. So far the LFS has pushed the Emperor 400 bio wheel system or a Penquin? I have heard the "bio-wheel" can be real noisy? I am not rich but want a good one, Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance. :)

if you want quiet the only way to go is canister. All of my hob power filters are much noisier than my canisters. Regardless if they have bio wheels (much noisier) or not. As to which canister is the most quiet? i have a fluval and an eheim and the eheim is the quiter of the two but the fluval is not much noisier and is still waaaaaaaaaaay quieter than the HOB filters i have. HTH :)

Thanks tstenback, I found this at Big Al's

The Eheim Classic 2215 chamber canister design allows for the greatest flexibility in media set up for biological, mechanical, chemical and absorptive filtration. The flow rate has been calculated to provide the exact balance needed between mechanical/biological long-term filtration and water circulation and oxygen enrichment, resulting in optimum conditions for successful aquarium keeping. The 2215 is suitable for aquariums up to 95 gallons and has a pump output of 164 GPH. The 2215 comes complete with media (Ehfisubstrat, Ehfimech and coarse and fine filter pads) and quick disconnect valves.

Would this be a good one?

Yes that one is fine. I have one on my 65 gal and have never had a hitch. I usually get a filter that is larger than i need so i would probably go for the 2217 for your tank as you are close to the max capacity of the 2215. JMO though. Good Luck with the tank and keep us posted. :)

Ran a few price checks and found the "Fluval 404 With Filter Media" to be about $50 cheaper, would this work as well for my size tank and be quieter than a Emperor 400?

Canisters rule and are nearly silent especially compared to anything with a bioweel. Eheim is the heavyweight champ of filters with accompanying higher price but you would not be displeased with one and the classic style canisters last forever from what i hear. However, if you can't stomach the extra $$$ for an Eheim, look into the Rena Filstars, they get rave reviews consistently, wheras Fluvals seem hit-or-miss, some people love their Fluvals, some say they leak.

I have a little 10 gallon and a whisper filter. It's great, I can't hear it at all. I usually sleep on the couch (too lazy to walk to the bed every night - I live alone) and the tank is 6 feet away. I'm a light sleeper and it never bothers me because I can't hear it.

Just wanted to share

I have an Eheim 2017 and a 2028 on my main tank, and the newer 2028 is much quiter than the older cannister filter. Both great filters, the 2028 is easier to maintain....

I have classic and pro filters (2213 and 2028) and I must say, that those pros are much easier to use. 2028 is quite expensive but it's worth it!

If you don't want to pay lot for filter, then think about putting HMF (Scroll it down and you see pictures of differend kind of setups) I think that
english is much easier for you ;) And even Rain- has some pictures of it, and another pic.

Hi, all! I just went to Big Al's store on the internet and saw several Rena Filstars filters. But the place doesn't tell you which size is suitable for a 80g. There's Rena XP1, XP2 and XP3. :dunno:

What a great informative forum this is!!! :D From what I have read looks like I will not be disappointed with a Eheim Thanks to all!!

my aquaclear is dead silent. you cant hear or feel it running at all.
