Apart from washing them when you buy and checking for snails, anything else?

I plan to have a sand substrate

light
co2 N K P -macro's
micros - Mg Mo Cu Zi and afew others i think

to sustain good plant growth. although the amounts will depends on how much light you have, with more light. you need more CO2 and macros and micro's

fish can provided all thats needed for plants in a low light tank (maybe with an additional top up of extra ferts every now and again)

Could you please define "extra ferts" in your last sentence? I'm still trying to get a handle on ferts.

the micro and macro solutions i mentions above you could get a ready mixed one like flourish, but mainly it all depends on the lights you have ... if you have high WPG you will need ferts and co2, if you have low light you wont

Thanks! I don't have high light, so you think I can just get away with Flourish? My plants just look a little tired.

yer =] i if your plants are looking abit weak /yellow leaves or something does a small amount of ferts

some water supplyers add chemicals to the water (micros and maybe macros) so water changes will bring some in. what are you trying to grow? because some plants need more than others
