Today my friend just gave some plants that I believed was java fern. Then when i went on the internet to find some java fern plant care tips i found another plant called Cryptocorynes that looks just like the java fern. How can i tell which plant I have?

Try doing a "google" images search. You'll get loads of images for crypts, and java fern; and you should have no difficulty telling which you have.

Java Fern has a stiff rhizome from which the leaves and roots grow, (the rhizome should not be buried it should be attached to some wood or stone). Crypts, (there are a lot of species), have regular roots and in most cases, the leaves grow from a central crown.
