What Is A Weather Loach?

Very fine gravel is best, I'd class them as temperate rather than cold water, the ones we get over here are the Chinese weather loach which requires higher temps than the Russian weather loach which is a banned species in the UK.

What size tank do you have? I ask as they can get to about 12" long so need something more than that width.
can u clear up witch is banned and why? :)

The european/russian species is Misgurnus fossilis and the chinese species is Misgurnus anguillicaudatus. Fossilis is banned as it is able to survive over here in water of 5C (winter), anguillicaudatus "apparently" cannot.

There was a type of weather loach banned, was it because they could take cold temps and people were letting them loose into UK waters where they were eating some kind of plant or fish?

Here is a good link about the the weather loach and about the species of weather loach and about the ban - http://www.loaches.com/species-index/weather-loach-misgurnis-anguillicaudatus

Sorry that link doesn't work any more. The loach I'm getting is about 9cm, not sure what kind though. Why are EUropean loaches banned -do they attack wildlife? Surely they are no worse than trout and salmon in rivers

The link I have tried it on Opera and Mozilla firefox and it is still working, so I'm not sure why it isn't working for you. It is a good link talks about the ban of weather loach.

It doesn't work by the way if you copy and paste it, you have to click on it or you can make it a new tab to make it work. So either way don't copy and paste it.

I have 2 dojo (weather loaches) in my tank with 2 angels, 1 swordtail, 1 black neon tetra, 1 platy, 2 scissortail rasoboras, and a pleco.

They are my absolute favorite out of the entire tank. Very active fish and they like to try to land on the angels occasionally. They swim around like crazy and are so fun to watch. They are supposed to be bottom feeders but mine come to the top to eat with the rest of the fish.

I've never seen mine mess with any of the other fish (other than trying to catch a ride) and I've had dwarf gouramis, guppies, mollies in the tank also.

Yeah they are really peaceful fish and they used to eat off ground but also eat with other fish at top and from your hands. Did yours ever get bloated belly with eating too much pellets, they end up floating up lol. They can't stay down and someone said they one of them had a bloated belly and kept floating up, they are really clever and work together and all of them went on top of the bloated weather loach so he wouldn't float up.
I temporary put mine in a small tank 30l as I was changing gravel in the bigger tank and 2 of them were in with a male molly who was quite aggressive to them. Next morning I foudn the gravel built up to the front glass and the castle ornament on top lol. They were both in the deep part of the gravel hiding. Once I got them into the big tank they were swimming like they were free forever.
