does anyone know of a cheap readily available planting substrate i can put a layer of under my black sand as laterite is rather expensive

i use JBL Aquabasis plus, and it appears to be working well, its quite cheap at £15 a bag, enough for 200 litres.

got it from my local Maidenhead, the only problem i do have with it is when i come to plant more plants, it fogs the tank up some what. I'll give it its due though, everything have stayed nice and green, and it did lower my PH a little.
