tank: rio 180
water stats: all within spec
stock: 3 x red tailed black shark, 2 x pim pictus, 2 x silver dollar, 3 x (now 2 x :/) green tiger barb

did last water change yesterday, everything fine as it was this morning. came home from work to find one of my green tiger barbs up against filtration system without a back fin, click on thumbnail for bigger pic:

i pushed him off the filtration system and, although his body was pointing directly upwards due to lack of fin assistance, he seemed pretty strong i.e. was making all the right body movements but obviously getting nowhere, think dog trying to wag a tail that's been cut off! so i took him out:

and i put him out of his misery. so do you reckon this was a disease, attack from another fish (if so likely candidate?) or a bit of both? the rear fin looks as though it's maybe been bitten off, possible?

It's very hard to tell, but I'd bet it was either one of the red tailed sharks or the other tigers. The RTBS get very aggressive towards their own kind and any fish that look a bit like them, and tigers are not good unless kept in a decent sized shoal.

Your stocking really needs a rethink; you're going to run into big problems with three RTBS in one tank; the silver dollars are going to grow too large, and the tigers need more of their own kind.

thanks for feedback, i think i'll probably end up re-housing all these fish, i'm going to upgrade to a 400 litre tank and house discus with tetra.

Best of luck, and I'm sorry about your barb :(
