As many of you know, I've been considering a change in the tank.

These kribs must go. they've been biting on the eels too much and constantly re-arrange the substrate, which is fine, but while they do that they also nip at my plants.

Then The elephant nose just isn't doing well due to stress in my opinion. Not from the water either. He doesn;t seem to have the greatest hiding, and can only weave himself in foilage. even when I make a slate cave big enough for him, the longest he spends in it is 3 minutes before going out and never using it again, presumeably because he can't turn around in a satisfactory manner.

And NOW he finally lets me get good pictures... as if to say "keep me... keep me..."
This first one gives an approximent length compared to my biggest, fattest eel.

The one thing I will get is a baby whale, which is like an elephant nose, but only grows to 4.5 inches maximum. That should allow me to make a cave suited for him, as well as something he can turn around in and enjoy.

Then the other two options I'm considering are....

A: A dwarf giraffe cat, which would be easier to make a cave for
or
B: two roselines/Red line torpedo barbs

Yes... I'm aware they perfer shoals of six, but honestly I've heard many people here on the fourms and other places only keeping two. In fact, I've never seen a report saying they have more than three. These guys usually only get bought as one fish for the centerpiece of 20 gallons even, since kids decide that's the one expensive fish they want and it looks like "Daddy" tetra.... But I don't know.

Any other options on what to get would be nice also. I'm thinking of moving the ABF back to the 10, as he's still being pestered by....

so yes, still quite a few problems to fix.

i used to keep a group of 7 red torpedoes.they are a fast swimming fish that needs room to move.think along the lines of a smaller silver shark.in my opinion, i wouldnt keep them in less than 5.i would say a 55 gallon long is the minimum for a group of 5.even if you get 2,they will be 6 inch fish in a couple of years.what size tank are they going in?????

it would be the 38 gallon, and that's why I figured only 2, because of size. an entier shoal would be insain, but I figured 2 would be feesable.

The reason I figure I can do it is because of how heavily planted the tank is, yet it still leaves open swimming space.

(not the best pic, but the most recent.)

good job on keeping 7, by the way.

i wouldnt add 2 dennisonii to a 38 planted.i dont think they would have enough space to swim.thats only my opinion though.they would be ok size wise when small in the tank, but not when fully grown.ive heard reports of red torpedoes being nippy when not kept in a group as well.most barbs are suggested as being in a group for a reason.

hmmmm.... thanks....

I seriously dobut I'll do the red-torpedo barb. Too many people nay say it, and you give better reasons that most. Are there any other suggestions you have? I'm almost 100% on getting the baby whale after getting these guys back to one of my best LFS.

so that pretty much leaves it at the dwarf giraffe catfish for now, although other options like a Red whiptail come to minds.

take time to research what you want.we all(me included)rush in and buy fish that sometimes arent ideal.do the fish get too big for the tank?????do they need to be kept on their own or in groups?????what water parameters do they need????

i like lots of fish and have made loads of mistakes about the compatabilty of different fish.i think the main thing for you would be to list what fish you like, your water stats etc and we can go from there.please, please dont rush in and buy fish hastily.you will lose loads of money when you take them back to the lfs and the main reason is the fishs welfare.

much agreed.

anyone have particular ideas on what to get besides A dwarf giraffe Catfish?

haha. no way am I going to risk a monster catfish in there.

So far I'm leaning towards letting my brochis in once the kribs go out, and hope that my eels go back to their mid dwelling status within the plants.

so,whats your suggested list so far gankutsuou????let us know what species you want to add,how many you want to add,and how big they are going to be when you add them.i dont know everything, far from it,but,i've learnt a lot from this forum plus ive learnt a lot from keeping lots of different fish myself.ive learnt good and bad.ive made plenty of mistakes i can tell you, but,my worst mistakes are ALWAYS rushing in to things.buying fish with out thinking things through.

allrighty.

Basically, here's what is currently in.

3x peacock eels (12" max, 8-10" more common)
1x Senegal Bichir (12" max, 10 inch is more common)
1x Elephant nose (10 inch max, 8" more common)
2x Kribs (4 inch max)
1x Clown pleco (3 inch max)
1x Queen arabesque (4 inch max)
1x ABF (4-6 inch max)

So, the kribs will be going at they;'re over agressive.
Then the Elephant will be going as it's lacking good hiding IMO.

Then replacing the Elephant will be a "baby whale", basically a dwarf version of an elephant nose with a blunted head and no funny nose that only gets to a max of 4.5 inches.

Then the brochis get to 3 inch max and are basically corries, big cories, and are already in the 10.

My senegal is practicaly a top dweller, and is up there 24/7. Notice how every picture I've taken of it has indeed been up at the top.

My eels, when not being pestered, will stick to coiling up in rock, or going to mid-dwelling status in the plants.

The plecos will keep to the rocks usually.

and then the brochis will probably be all over the tank, but most 24/7 the bottom level

hooolllyyy crap! 1000 posts and I didn't even notice!

you need some mid level fish.i'll have a think :fish: :fish: :fish: and see what i can come up with.

great! all thoughts appreciated...

but thing is, when they're not being harrassed, my eels are mostly mid-level, for much over half the day.
They string themselves in plants and hang there, or up on the heater suction, or even into plants and onto the filter. They're funny.

and My bichir is a top level swimmer almost 24/7. He must think there's food. but as he grows up, I think he'll sink back down.

If my tank was wider and my eels didn't get up to such high levels, I'd do a gar trio or something cool....
Rainbows of certain tpes were also considered. But the brochis will go ahead in.

and good news. If I keep my room picked up and get rid of my 1 and 10 g's, I'll upgrade to a 20 after the holidays probably! :shout:

ah, sorry, but the minimum tank size posted for him on that very page is 50 gallons
I Took the kribs to the LFS and came upon the decision that my brochis would indeed inhabbit the 38, while I got apistos of sorts for the 10, and the 10 will turn into a 20-30 after xmas if I keep my room picked up :D
