I am going to go buy a little school of tiger barbs for my 55 gallon tank.

How many is best?

What other fish goes good with tiger barbs?

Bala Shark?

Convict Cichlids?

Other Tiger Barbs? :p IMO they're a species only tank or go with fish as aggressive as they are and the same size. A school of 6 or more is good and Balas grow too large for a 55g. Convicts might be too aggressive for Tigers but I haven't kept them before.

Tiger barbs are fin nippers so you have to becareful what you choose, the bigger group the better cuts out on aggression,no bala shark i'm afraid need big tanks, unless you will be getting a bigger tank in the near future, they are socialable fish and peaceful.

Fish that I have been able to successfully keep with tiger barbs, that also will do well in a tank your size:

Golden Barbs

Cherry Barbs

Yoyo loaches

Red tailed black shark

Albino Corys (if the corys did not have lots of good hiding places then the barbs would chase them time to time)

Bronze Corys

Pepperment Corys

Glowlight Tetras

Serpae tetra

Sailfin Pleco

There are many more fish you can keep with tiger barbs, these are just fish that I have kept with mine over the years. When I think of the rest I’ll add them.

EDIT: Having thought about it some more I would not recommend the albino corys, overall mine did well, but for some reason the barbs loved to search the tank for them and chase them out of there hiding places.

I was alos albe to get rummy nosed tetras with my tiger barbs.

keep at least 10 of them

nothing with long fins, nothing that can eat them, bottom dwellers are great. nothing fragile.

Thats the best advice for them....Tigers may be fin nippers but are not overly aggressive and will not be able to defend itself from overly aggressive fish....in a 55gal 10+ would look great!

I kept a female convict with a group of tiger barbs for about 4months without any problems...so i wouldn't say its out of the question..but a breeding pair of cons are definately not a good idea.

I currently have a small group of 6 tiger barbs living with 8 serpae tetras. The tetras are a little nippy so I thought they would get along well. They have been there for about 5 months and no problems so far. They actually school together sometimes. They seemed content when the 3 albino tigers were in with the serpae tetras then the others got into the group and there were all 12 just swimming together. The albino tigers look very similar to the serpae tetras.
I have them in a 60" tall tank and the tigers seem to like the deep areas much more then the tetras do. The tetras stay about 24" or less and the barbs go all the way to the bottom and then back up.

Good luck with yours.

I've had good luck keeping tiger barbs with some loaches and gold/3 spot gouramis. Though the gouramis are larger 3" or so and I know at least one of them in there is a male. They do hold their own just fine. I've pretty much taken everything else out of the tank aside from those three.

I have 5 tiger barbs in a 55 gal with 8 serpae tetras, 1 pristella tetra (need mroe of them) 6 pearl gouramis, 5 oto cats and 2 kribs. I have never, repeat NEVER had a problem with tiger barbs nipping, have never caught them chasing a fish around teh tank that wasnt another tiger! I'm hesatant to add gouramis like i would like with their longer fins. I've had a bigger problem with my serpae tetras harassing one of my kribs when i brought him home!

My tigers (12) are in a 55 with 6 odessa barbs and 6 checkered barbs. This tank is awesome.

I had tried keeping the tigers with other fish but was not successful. They would chase my cories and ottos. They stayed in a species 29 gallon tank for a while but then I decided to do an all barb tank with my 55 and this is working very well for me.

It's funny you saying that as my cherry barb kept chasing my corys so had to move him to another tank.

I have 9 tiger barbs in my 55 with three (very) small bala sharks, three small angels, and four silver dollars. Everyone says they won't work together but mine do. My point is fish are similar to people. They are all different even in the same species. All you can do is try some that you like and be prepared to remove them if they don't get along.
