Here in the American West and specifically, where I am , on the banks of the Yellowstone River , snowmelt from the mountains is what gives us most of our water . Right now the snowmelt has peaked and will gradually dribble down until fall and then in winter the river will run low . Two weeks ago the water coming out of the tap was 48 PPM TDS and today it’s up to 73 PPM TDS . That’s soft water no matter how you slice it or dice it . Doing my water changes with that water suits most of my fish and even my Endler’s ( Guppies ) and Platy’s are okay with it but guess what ? The duckweed in my livebearer aquarium is , for all practical purposes , GONE ! Did this soft water kill it ? My hornwort in the same aquarium has slowed its growth dramatically . It isn’t dead but it’s holding its own . I used to thin it a lot every week and lately I haven’t . What gives ?

water and "weeds" are different everywhere... you plants plants probably don't like what ever the solids are that increased your ppm

My duckweed thrives (grrr) in my local very softwater, but hornwort dissolves very quickly. I have a couple of anemic stands hanging on.

Interestingly (to me), I was able to test the water in a lake rich in hornwort, and it was quite soft, much like my current tap. But what minerals are there probably matter.

Another thing that doesn’t tolerate soft water so well is snails . Do you suppose it’s got to do with needing a certain amount of mineral content to grow their shells , and if so , why would that kill the organism ?

I have very softwater and duckweed has in the past grown in amounts that it created issues and I over the course of a couple of weeks managed to remove it all. Any possibility that your fish are eating it? Duckweed is pretty nutritious, https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC6215809/, if a fish can eat duckweed, I could see them eating it all.
