What Fish....

Hello all

I am so excited about my new tank that I am already looking for fish, even though the tank wont be ready for a few weeks yet!

Initially I was going to get rid of my 125L and transfer all the fish from it to the new 440L - but now I have decided to keep them both and leave the 125L community as it is.

so have been surfing around looking at fish. But there is lots of conflicting advice around about tankmates and stuff so here are the fish I am looking at for anyone who feels like giving me an opinion please

Yellow Rainbow Fish
Red Rainbow Fish
Galaxy rasbora
Pepper cory
Golden tetra
Danio - I am loving the giant one!!

any thoughts?

The Rainbows are a good choice but I would just go with them. As the Reds get around 4.5" and the Yellows get around 3.5" and both are schooling fish. These are stocking ideas for the 125L right? If so I would go with 3-4 Reds and 3-4 Yellows. Cories would be fine for the bottom as well.

All of the fish you have mentioned would mix well in a 440L setup, although personally i would lose the tetras as they aren't quite as active as the other 4 shoaling species and may find them too boisterous

Also have you though about having a centrepiece fish (such as a Severum or similar) or do you prefer lots of active groups?

what are the dimensions btw?

Looking at the list above I would go for something like this;
5x Yellow Rainbow Fish
5x Red Rainbow Fish
5x Giant Danio
10x Galaxy rasbora
15x Pepper cory

I love the Severums - am just trying to get my head round having lots of room will go and look them up

Can't go wrong with the rainbows. Keep in mind that they need to be in groups of 6 or more and you need more females than males. They also need a varied diet that is about 60% vegetable based. This can easily be achieved by feeding high quality spirulina flakes as a staple and supplemented by feeding fresh vegetables like blanched shelled peas. Feed meaty foods as a treat once or twice a week. In addition to that, the rainbows need 50% or larger waterchanges every week.

Severums are good but can be agerssive so you are limited to what you can keep with them. www.discountfish.co.uk had some red spotted severums in i was tempted but it ment getting rid of my tetras. Rainbows are nice and like robby said they need to be in groups of 6+. My advice is have a few groups of small shoalling fish like rasboras, rainbows, tetras, barbs etc. Its makes your tank look alive rather than a few large fish hiding in a corner. But thats my opinion. Hope this helps and good look

Oh sorry I wasn't paying attention to the question. All the previous stocking suggestions sound good to me. But the only thing I would be concerned with would be if the Galaxy Rasboras would get bullied during feeding time. I have had them in the past and found they are very very shy and passive when it comes to feeding.
In terms of cichlids Angels would be nice in that set up. But if you were looking for a smaller type cichlid Rams or Keyholes would do well in that setup. As mentioned before I would be unsure of the Severums aggression, in the past I found severums usually only showed aggression towards other cichlids. But there might be aggression during feeding time. Also it goes with out mention that any fish will most likely eat any fish that can fit into their mouths, so with the cichlids the Galaxy Rasboras might be food for them, depending on size of course.

Severums are rarely particularly aggressive fish. I have never had a problem with them and they are certainly good with rainbowfish.

I would highly recommend the rainbows, love them, just follow Drobbyb's advice regarding their dietry requirements and water change requirements.

I would say you would be fine with 1 severum, a large group of rainbows, 5 or 6 of each species mentioned, Giant Danios would also be fine with them, corydoras for the bottom also, a nice large group or groups of several different species.

The only problem maybe if you do go for a severum would be the galaxy rasboras, as they dont get very large and could certainly be a snack for a full grown severum, having said that, my larger severum, doesnt bother any smaller fish, including pristella tetras that I have with him and if the sev grows with them, you might get away with it, but usually best to be safe than sorry.

Am getting this one - however the website says its 350L?? The guy who sold it to me says its 440L? and the calculator on here says its 435L?? ho hum!
