My partner has decided to take his gouramis back to the lfs and wants something suitable for our 40g tank. We have 5 plecs, 3 Pictus catfish and 3 Pearl catfish. He really likes the tiger barbs and the green barbs but isn't sure if they'll be aggressive towards our plecs and catfish. Can anyone help with this please or make a suggestion for peaceful medium sized fish that would be ok?

Hi,

A good one for you I'm sure is the five-banded barb. They look just like tiger barbs, but are smaller and much much friendlier, I've had mine for over 2 years now, and they're great. They'll do well with the other fish in your tank, and they'll do better in a school, four or more is good. They make a great difference in a tank with their markings.

Go on...get some!
Sarah

not all plecs grow big.

what kind of plec, pictus and "pearl"s specifically are they? it sounds like a lot of waste for one tank to be adding more fish

You need to think about rehoming some of the fish you already have, not adding more IMO.

We are actually getting a 95g tank and an 83g tank in the next few weeks so no, I am not going to rehome my fish.
Also they are still fairly small otherwise we would not have put them altogether, it is only temporary.
I was actually curious as to whether barbs could be kept with our plecs and catfish.
Thanks sarahf for your reply. We have 6 five-banded barbs in another tank and you are right, they are great! They are perhaps one of our favourite fish :D

with tanks that big did you think about tin foil barbs? I have two that are way too big for the 75gl tank they're in, but they are very gentle.

Hi bmcelfresh, hadn't thought about tinfoil barbs. How big do they get? We don't want anything that gets much bigger than 4-5inches. :)

With the holidays it's been a while since I have logged on. The tin foil barbs get to be about 16". Mine are at about 13" now. Again, very gentle.

Try angels or discus or keyhole cichlids, they are all very gentle but discus are hard to take care of due to there water requirements.

Thanks to all for the replies. We now have the tank which is about 125US Gallons, unfortunately it's not up and running yet.
We've put the sand in and are hopefully getting a background and gravel today.
We've decided on Tiger Barbs, Green Barbs and Odessa Barbs but still unsure on what else. My partner isn't keen on Tinfoil Barbs so we are still open to suggestions!
Picture of the tank at the moment.
