I am in the process of creating a 6ft planted tank (most stuff ordered)

I am now thinking about what fish I want in it.

I love the small brightly coloured fish, i.e. neons.
I also love the stripey fish i.e. Tiger barbs & clow loaches.

I am toying with the idea of using a larger feature fish type & mixing this with a community tank.

I love discus but also angels.

Can discus be kept in groups as these are good as well??

A shoal of clowns is a must, neons would be nice too.

What about utility fish such as algae eaters?

If you had a 6footer to fill what would you have??

Dream compatible (and easy to get hold of) fish lists please.

I wouldn't have tiger barbs because they are agressive and nippy and will limit what you stock to the tank alot.

If you like stripey fish how about khuli loachs;

or candy striped plec;

For a large growing algae eater how about a common plec;

Or some oto's? Otos stay very small but are effective algae eaters throughout their lives, most algae eating fish are plecs but the majority of algae eating go off algae as they mature, the vast majority of algae eating fish will need some protein in their diets like prawns or bloodworms etc.

Hi,

You're going planted right? Discus would be lovely to have, but mixing them or Angels with neons is probably a no no. Neons are Angels food in the wild, or so I keep reading. I think keeping discus and neons is more of opinion. It seems some people keep them together without problems (or I could be mixing up with cardinals).

I saw in my LFS a while ago "large cardinal tetras". Cardinals imo are more beautiful than neons. And being slightly larger may be more suitable with discus?

If you do consider cardinals, they are more suited to a mature tank and they are best to get after 6 months.

If you change your mind about discus/angels you could look into gouramis.

Clown loach grow quite large. 12 inches according to websites I've seen, but they say up to 6 inches in aquariums. I know you have a large tank, but consider some of the other loaches that I think are sometimes overlooked. I have botia striata in my avatar...a stripey loach that grows to 4 inches.

If you want an algae eating crew I would get a shoal of otos (the more the better), these are quite sensitive to water so I would get these as last as possible. And Amano shrimp :) They are great, also algae eaters. These fish/shrimp won't eat all kinds of algae but they'll help if you have enough of them.

As for what I would personally put in a 6 foot tank...I'm boring...it'd be
10 botia striata
15 otos
15 amano shrimp
and as many cardinals as I could fit!!
