What Fish Should I Have?

I have a 10 gallon tank (45-50l) UK.
I currently have balloon mollies, platys, and a few others.
When these die off, I'd like to do something other than common livebearers.
Any suggestions?

Not shrimps (got them)
Not catfish (got a BN)

A dwarf gourami or a Betta as the centerpiece fish and a shoal of neons would look nice in a 10 gallon

So 1 dwarf gourami and 5+ neons?
Any specific gender of gourami, or are both sexes 'sociable'?

I don't know if they are more sociable depending on gender but, IMO I would get a male just because they have brighter colors and this is going to be the centerpiece fish in your tank so something with bright colors.

When we first started out, we had a 60l tank and had a Royal Red / Flame DG as our centre fish. He was very pretty.

Mind you, I have seen some very nice half moon betta recently aswell. I was almost tempted but am meant to be cutting down!!
