40 litre is a little on the small size for the species you have, if I am honest. To make the tetras and corys happy they need to be in groups of 6 or more. The platys are not so restrictive but you do need at least two females to each male to stop the females getting bullied.

That you mean you'd have:

6 black neons
6 neons
6 peppered corys

Plus the platys.

That's about what I'd put in a 70 litre.

Getting the 100 litre is a good idea, I think. Put all your current stock in there, add enough to make sure you have the right group sizes and maybe add a few more. The 40 litre could be used as a lovely tank for some smaller fish like guppies or a siamese fighting fish (betta).

Have a read of this link. It has a lot of info about the general needs of all species of fish and some information on specific species.

Thankyou so much thats a big help, one more thing, when i get my 100 litre tank i can just put the 40 litres of water from my current tank straight in with my fish but will i have to fill the rest up over a period of time, like when you change the water ? E.G 20% each week?

I would do it like this. Get a bucket and put a decent amount of water from the tank A (40l) into it. Catch your fish and put them in here. Now you are free to put the rest of tank A's water and gravel into tank B (100l). Fill tank B up some more with treated water, just like refilling after a water change, but leave enough room to add the water from the bucket, and put your heater in and turn it on.
if you are using a new filter put your old filter pad in the new filter and let in run in your tank for about half an hour. If not just put your old filter into tank B and run for half an hour. I usually use this time to arrange the decor.

Then, put your fish into tank B, being careful not to just dump them in, and then give them time to get settled and relax with the lights off. I usually do this at night, so I can just resume my schedule like normal in the morning.
