what fish is this.

It's a pacu: http://www.elmersaquarium.com/10pacu.htm

Look at the bottom right picture. Same fish down to the thick black fringe on the anal fin, pointier head and big dorsal.

In contrast, here's a list of various piranha species + photos: http://www.petsforum.com/aquageo/Posters/images/E14163.gif

BTW, taken from that list, this is the red-belly in particular (the most common piranha available): http://www.petsforum.com/aquageo/Posters/images/E14160.gif (not the reddest of red bellies but the shape is clear).

Note that younger piranhas have a more pointed face (and very young red-bellies in particular are silver colored and lack the rich red-orange belly).

Should warn you though, I'm no expert. Get a second opinion. Mixing up a pacu with a piranha is one mistake you don't want to make.

Looks like pacu to me

I'd also say Pacu, looks too full bodied for a piranha.
