:D IV just started my new marine tank with LR and im just going to have fish

what gos well with a Volitan lionfish if you could help me go... :hey:
Im just starting in saltwater so i really need help :/

im not sure what would go well, but basically in general, any fish which is smaller or the same size as the lion's mouth will become a meal. so anything else could be ok, but the pros on here can tell u exact types.

How bigs the tank its going into Benny? If we know the tank parameters, we can better advise you on what could be suitable for a Volitans. :good: As already said, any fish that is larger than the Lions mouth, but this is not a stead fast rule as you also need the room to keep large fish like a Volitans lion with other fish.

Volitins get very large on their own and require a large tank to begin with. It also helps if you do not feed the lion live food. If you can get it to take frozen and you keep it well fed you shouldn't have any problems with similar sized fish. For starters groupers, eels, angels can work. You have to research specific species as there can be some compatability issues.

The tank i have is a 6ft by 2ft by 2 and ahafe ft high its prity big :)

I just got my own lionfish and my research pointed out that nearly ANY fish it can fit in its mouth is a good possiblity for a meal. Keep in mind that their mouths are bigger than they appear at first glance, so be careful.

It is also advisable to not keep a non aggressive fish in the same tank. This would include any real slow moving fish as well. Lionfish move very carefully and slowly, constantly setting themselves up for a good postion to either swallow prey or defend themselves. Slow moving fish can be percieved as a threat and be 'stung' but a lionfish's dorsal fin.

With such a big tank, (mine is a 90 gallon tank, nearly three feet tall) you need to consider how to clean the tank and do other maintenance that will work without you having to keep your hands in or near the lionfish. I couldnt find a python long enough to get to my substrate without putting my hand in the water, so I used a wooden dowel and some hose clamps to make a handle for it. I also found a long pole that had an algea scrubber, an algea razor blade, and a shovel as attatchments for the end. It is a great tool for getting stuff off of the substrate and keeping the front and sides of the tank's glass clean, again with my hands nice and dry.

I keep a porcupine puffer and a snowflake moray eel with my lionfish. They all get along just swimmingly (pun intended) and there is no real fighting going on so far. However, I have yet to get my lionfish to eat frozen foods and am still trying to ween him off of live feeder fish.

:D cool i was looking at get a snowflake eel .... do the lionfish mack heep's of wast because i got told there like an (oscar) in meaning same amount of wast is this right???

Yes, as any predator it is a messy eater. Also a word of caution with puffers, they are known to pick on lions so you may want to watch those two in the future.

I think your tank is a good size for a volitan and most fish that won't fit in its mouth will be good.

My puffer did attempt to pick at the lionfish's long fins, but learned his lesson quickly. I also moved a lot of live rock to disturb territories and now both rest in different sides of the tank, but will swim around freely. This was a situation in which the sequence of adding the fish played a big role in my success. The puffer came first and then the lionfish in my tank. I may have been better off adding them in reverse, but moving around the live rock helped tremendously.

do you think this will work

volitans lionfish

Polka Dot Grouper or Soapfish Grouper

Moray Eel

Trigger
