What Fish For A 55 Gal?

I am looking for ideas of compatible fish for my 55 gal tank. It is a well filtered tank with good lighting and heat. It has high pH, around 8.0 and high hardness. With out adding salts or acids to the water what would be some good combination I could do?

I was thinking that, which ones should I aim for and can anything else go in the tank with a cichlids? I like the Malawian Cichlids best.

well it all depends on what kinda fish you are interested in all you need to go by is the rule of thumb which is 1gal per 1 inch of fish. there is a wide variaty of fish out there that you could choose from.

Yes it will be my first tank. I just want to make sure I do everything I can right for the fish! For the most part I am pretty knowledgable about fish, but I just want help with compatibility issues and such!

I would like to do a friendly community tank or an african Malawian Cichlid community! suggestions

well i think you done well so far....how long has you tank been up and running for??

also a couple of popular fish in malawian tanks are peacocks (there and some really great varitys out there) also johanni, electric blues and yellows there is really just too much out there to choose from.

at the moment i have 3 tanks running

1. a 4ft peacock tank which has many different varietys of this species and they have really beutiful colour
2. a 2ft blue ram tank these guys are really pretty fish with great colours and personality
3. an 8ft frontosa tank this is the centre peice of my loungeroom and are 1 of the most amazing of the african cichlids

its all just a matter of personal preferance. i think maybe if you go down to your local aquarium and see if there are any fish that you like and if there are do so research on them to see what they like in water parametres and enviroment and you should do fine

The 20 gal was a friend of mines tank which he gave me the fish because he moved to salt water... I guess I should have said my first tank set up.

Give me a good combination, pretend this is your tank and you get to pick all the fish, say numbers, whether male or female. thanks
