What Does The Ballast Do?

Hi All, i have just bought a second hand aquarium and the ballast and fans have been moved from the hood of the aquarium into the cabinet. What exactly is the function of the ballsat and is this normal to move it from its original place? I was told this was to quieten the aquarium a little.

The ballast controls the current passing through the lighting tube.
Its a very complicated system to explain but if you do want to know exactly what it does here is a handy Link.

as for the reasons they were moved from you hood to inside the cabinet i couldn't tell you. There could be many reasons,

Reduce noise bu enclosing ballast inside the cabinet.

Reduce the heat in the tank by moving it away from the main body of water.

Purely aesthetic reasons.

however it it all works and there is no reason to move it back then don`t worry about it.
