What Does Chloramines Mean

Only thing i dont like about prime is the smell :( its my favorite conditioner though

Edit:Oh yeah, i forgot to mention that its super concentrated too :)

I vouch for Prime, for some reason i dont find many peeps in UK using it, its well regarded and the Seachem website will tell you all you need to know really, and like the peeps mention, its super concentrated and actually works out cheaper than most other water conditioners, and it does deal well with Chloramine, i cant remember the science, but some water conditioners, merely "seperate the ammonia in the chloramine and not deal with the chloramine properly, i am sure i read this somewhere and i had some good links about it once, will try and find them again.

If you read the Seachem website they own up that they market it for reducing Nirtite Toxicity also which is true (at a higher dosage) but actually they didnt intend for this, they just disovered it during random trials of the product!!!

I actually really like the smell, and sometimes chuck some in the bath if i run out of bath oils.

All you need is a dechlorinator like Prime, Stress Coat, etc. Forget all the other chemicals as they do absolutely nothing for your tank. They are nothing more than quick fixes for problems that need to be solved, not doctored.

Watch the water conditioners that say they remove chlorine & chloramine with no mention of removing ammonia. They will break the chlorine/ammonia bond in chloramine, neuteralize the chlorine, and leave you with ammonia. This slight amount of ammonia will be taken care of by your nitrifying bacteria, in the mean time your fish will be exposed to a slight amount of ammonia.

The conditioners that state that they remove ammonia actually convert it to ammonium, which is used the same as ammonia by your nitrifying bacteria.

completely missed this post from Tolak, thats exactly the link i was referring to, very useful link

prime contains the same thing as ammolock+dechlorinator in a highly concentrated bottle. This makes it very environmentally friendly (uses less plastic) and cheap.

i use prime for water changes and i put a few drops of stress coat when acclimating fish to replenish their slime.

I don't use anthing for my fishes slime coat unless they are transported. I think too much lets their immune system take a break, so they are more susceptible. Also, using Chloramine is to prevent organic particles from bonding with chlorine, which makes volatile organic substances.
