A background just adds to the look of a tank, depending on the color it may make the fish stand out more. Other than that it does nothing.

really getting an attitude doesnt help people get info. but.... from what i understand some people will wrap the tank on 3 sides to try to minimize sudden movements to jumpy fish as to not spook them.
