I was just wondering what you all find to the be best medication for ich.

I currently have a small outbreak. I am using Maracide, and have used it in the past sucessfully. I guess not completely sucessfully, as it's back again after a few months off. I read some article a while back stating that the manufacturers of ich treatments purposely lower the effectiveness of their treatment so that the ich will come back and you'll be forced to buy more meds. All very conspiracy theory-ish. I don't know if I believe it. I wouldn't put it past them, the almighty dollar and all.

I have planted tanks with snails and/or shrimp so this limits what I can use. I would still like to hear any of your first hand experience with treating this scourge, and if it came back or not. What is your #1 med of choice?

I use FMG by NT labs (doubtfull you can get it in Canada)
FMG= Formalin(formeldahyide) and Malachite Green
I have a recipe for making your own FMG somewhere, I'll try and find it

Edit
ok the recipie 1.5ml of formalin to 5ml of malachite
doesing at the rate of 1ml FMG per 30 litres of water.
(treat consecutivly for five days)

I just have to say that both these chemicals are highly toxic to us and care should always be taken when handling/mixing them. always wear rubber gloves.
If pregnant do not handle malachite is has been linked to cancer in unborn children.

Interpet Anti Whitespot with a tempature of 82F and increased ariation. I medicate for 7 days, do a 40% waterchange, medicate for 7 days, 40% waterchange and medicate before the final waterchange. In all medicating for at least 21 days to catch the appropriate stage of the life cycle and making the water warmer to speed the cycle up.

I use the interpet anti whitespot+ too, its so effective that the spots actually drop off of the fish within 24 hours of the first dose!!
I've never had to go any further than one course of medicating with this when combined with a 50% water change before adding the first dose and raising the temperature to 30c for the duration of the course.

It's great stuff!! I'm just really paranoid about it coming back in some super strength form!!

I've only encountered whitespot once in the past, but i also used the Interpet treament and found it very effective even though at the time i took some time to diagnose the whitespot and it had already killed many fish by the time i started treating them, the med was still very effective :nod: .
The best way to prevent whitespot from coming back is to simply continue treating the fish for a minimum of 2weeks after the spots have disapeared and to then finish the treatment off with some Liquisel by Interpet(which helps kill fish deseases present in the tank water, does not harm filtration) :thumbs: . I would not buy any new fish for at least 4weeks after the spots have disapeared as they are the most likely to get re-infected.

oops, my fish are pregnant and ive trated with malachite green? very bad, fatal to fry?
