Could someone please explain in the simplest way what is carbon used for? Why do people remove it? I have heard several people mention it but thats about it lol

sorry about my persistence i ask alot of questions but this forum is the best way for me to gain knowledge

Carbon removes chemical/mineral impurities from the water. People remove it when they're medicating a tank so it doens't remove the meds. And a lot of people don't use it to start with b/c how long it really lasts is somewhat debatable, and if you're using water conditioner it's not really needed. And you don't want it if you've got a planted tank, becuase your plants need the minerals and stuff in the water.
There's no such thing as too many questions... ask away! :)

Good explanation on Wiki. As to why some love it, some hate it, some love it part-time, it's all a matter of opinion.

I've heard people say that when activated carbon reaches its absorbent capacity, it starts leeching. I've also heard that carbon absorbs stuff you want it to absorb but it also absorb stuff you don't want it to absorb. Now, here-say is different from fact. I'd recommend that you do your own research and obtain your own conclusions!

Personally, I do not use carbon. I use it to remove stuff like machalite (spell?) green.
