I dont see why that wouldnt work on a fresh water tank? As far as I'm concerned with fresh water you can tape a flashlight to the wall and point it at the tank.

I wouldn't be sure of it's effectiveness. But, it may be worth a try.

I know of one person from another forum who set up an invert-only nano with LED lighting and is growing macro well with it (no corals though). It's something I've been considering for my picos since seeing that other guy's tank, mainly because of the heat difference.
