I bought a plant at a local PetSmart (I know, I know) tonight. It's an Anubis so I think I might be okay. Anyway, it came in a plastic tube, and inside that is a little plastic cylinder about 2 inches in diameter and height. Most of the plant is sticking out the top, and all the roots are inside the cylinder in some sort of gel. The packaging says it's ready to plant in the cylinder. Does this seem right? Should I tear apart the cylinder and plant it into the sand in my tank?

About 3 years ago I had a Planted 30g tank(I wish I still had it today), I to baught some of those plants that came in the cylinder I thaught to myself what a great invension someone thinking of that just pick the plant up and go! After about a week I noticed they where not donig to well in my tank but all my other plants where fine! I later then did research on the names to see what they actually where and found out that they where bog plants and I was a little pissed off but then realized It could have been worse. So my moral of the story is I got taken but if its an Anubias you Might be okay! and as for advice I don't know much about the Anubis plant sorry I couldn't help just thaught I would pass my story on.

Yeah, I also bought an "Aqua Fern" which is a terrarium plant. I'm going to try and return that one tomorrow...

anubis should be tied to wood or rocks with the roots exposed. they will rot if you bury them

Emma :)

So I just tie the plant to a rock with a string, or something, and just set the rock on top of the sand?

The roots can actually be buried but the rhizome should stay above the substrate to prevent rotting.
