So my Betta has died of some hideous infection (I think it was fungus but it could have been bacterial). Now I am left with a 10 gallon tank and not quite sure how to deal with it...

Do I strip it all down, bin the gravel, wood, filter media and plants (ouch only had them a week) and start from scratch ? Can I get away with a thorough washing of the gravel and plants (and a new filter media) ? Do I treat the tank as if there was an ill fish in it and then water change as normal?

I'd like to get the tank back in shape for a new fish, just not sure how extreme I need to be.

Any advice greatfully recieved :)

This is what I would do:

strip the tank down
bleach the tank in weak chlorine-based bleach
d:eek: the plants+wood
boil the gravel
get new filter media

Hmm... I supose I could boil the wood too, that should destroy any lingering bacteria....

I suspect ditching the plants is the way to go tho, indeed. At least they were leftovers from the big tank :) I can always go pick up a couple of nice ones from the petshop when I am ready.

I've currently added a very strong salt solution to run through the filter and hopefully help disinfect the tank before I dismantle the gravel etc. I'll let that sit for a few hours then drain the lot and start from scratch.

Thanks for the tips DwarfGourami. Hopefully the tank will be back in service before too long. :)
