Hi

about to move these survivors from the death orb into their new home, but over the last few weeks noticed this gap on one of the tails. Ive been informed its not fin rot, but the gap has got progressively worse (see both pics). none of the other 3 fish or the 5 fry are showing any issues. Should I move them all or keep this one in the orb for now?

water changes 50% each week.
parameters are all good.

did have some ich a month back, but this cleared with treatment.

what is the ammonia, nitrite, nitrate and pH of the water?

clamped fins is either poor water quality or external protozoan infection. salt is the ebst treatment (2 heaped tablespoons per 20 litres or water for 2-4 weeks).

ammonia and nitrites are zero. Nitrate about 20

Someone else has suggested treating with esha2000 for fin rot. Can both be applied at the same time and are both ok with fry in the tank?

lastly I understand you should dilute the salt in some of the tank water before adding it back into the tank, is this correct?

cheers

Clamped fins can also be a sign of stressed fish there doesn’t always have to be a disease involved or an infection. One example could be a bullied fish or a fish that is being kept in the wrong water parameters

See the fish at the bottom, big gap in the tail, that is not from nipping and has progressively got worse. Clamp fin probably a by product of whatever is causing the tail issue.

so can both medications be applied at the same time, and will they affect the fry in the tank?

Livebearer fry are fine with salt, and I've used eSHa-2000 with guppy fry that were two days old, and they're fine, healthy young adults now. But I wouldn't use both at the same time, no.

eSHa 2000 is only a three day course, so you could start with that, remove the medication from the water via water changes and adding carbon to the filter, then go to salt treatment to hopefully heal them the rest of the way. Livebearers are very salt tolerant, I have no concerns about fry during salt treatment, and I think pretty highly of the eSHa meds having used them with fry, cories, otos and shrimp, who were fine. :)

Yes, mix the salt into some water before adding it into the tank, if it goes straight into the tank without being dissolved first, it can hurt them. Just remove say 10 litres from the tank, replace with a fresh ten litres with the salt quantity for the whole tank mixed into it.

When you water change during salt treatment or medicating, need to replace the amount you've removed. If you remove ten litres, need to add another tablespoon into the new water to keep the salinity at the same level.:)
