Like a newb I posted this first in the beginner forum. I was curious if anyone had an idea on what type of Cichlid this might be. Oh and notice how my Lab poked her nose into the second pic. :D

Thnaks in advance for any help.

To me that looks like a jack dempsy, but i'm not the expert. PM Lynden and ask him hes probably the smartest guy on the forums(in my oppinion) B)

Its a male Maylandia Lombardoi, aka Kenyi.

Ahhh, thanks a million. After reading up I see it can be quite they little hellion. So far no real problems, it will spar with my Lab occasionally but they do no actual harm to each other yet. Unlike the bloody Melanochromis auratus I used to have, evil little fish there.

Lombardoi are pretty high up the aggression scale but certainly not as bad as Auratus. Labs do better in groups so if you have room, it would be worth adding another 2 or 3, this would also help spread any aggression around. :good:

Thats sounds like a good idea about the labs, so far the Cobalt blue is the undisputed tank boss, but this guy I will keep my eye on. I am starting to look online more becuase Wal-Mart is clueless about Cichlids and my LFS would make most people fly into a rage. The next closest fish store is 60+ miles away. I am a bit nervous about getting fish "shipped" to me but it might be the only way I can truly get the right fish.

I've never fancied having fish shipped but i know a few members do so successfully. Wallmart are useless though, the UK equivalent is Pets@Home and everything is labeled as "assorted Cichlids" and people buy them to go with Tetra's etc because there's no-one to tell them otherwise.

pets at home should be closed down IMO. the worst of the worst, i hate going in there as i just want to buy all the fish as i feel sorry for the poor little buggers.

every tank has at least 1 dead fish in there, and i think they sell fish that are way too young.

Wal-mart is the same way, not so many dead fish but selling juvenile Cichlids with no comment on aggression is ignorant. Take it from me I work there. I try to be in control of all the fish sales I can but being a manager dont let me stay in one place very long. Its disturbing how people buy fish with no clue about them. By far the most rampant are those who pick up there five gallon plastic aquarium (obviously no thought of cycling), and then want five guppies, two corys, three Cichlids, and a black moor because there 6 year old wants the "bubble eye fish too". That not an exaggeration, I try to talk them down, but it only works sometimes.

its a shame that these stores dont take more time with labeling, all it needs to say is "should be kept with own species only"

a friend of mine owns a fish shop and i have been in there when a woman has come in and asked for 2 x 2" goldfish to go in the giant brandy glass she bought from the supermarket next door. he just laughed at her and refused to sell them to her. but you know damn well she probably went else where to get them, and i suppose you can only educate ppl who want to listen.

i guess you must have alot of ppl ask for malawi due to their bright colours?
thats how i ended up doing malawi, wrongly sold "dwarf cichlids that are ok in a comunity tank" turned out to be a yellow labs. could have been worse but............
