I wouldn't keep the lights on more than between 6 hours and 8 on the high end.

Algae (green stuff) is a build up of posphates in the water. This can be triggered by too much lighting, sunlight hitting the tank and being slack when it comes to water changes.

You can reduce the amount of algae by adjusting the times your lights are on, moving a tank out of sunlight, keeping up water changes, not over feeding, buying some algae eating fish, using algae scrubbers and if none of the above don't work, use algae removing chemicals.

HTH :)

Chemicals should be a last resort as they're likely to also harm the beneficial bacteria and do who knows what else to the water.
