After going through a roller coaster with the person I was supposed to buy my lighting from. I've decided to turn him down. So I was wondering whats the best thing I can get for my 30gallon with $100-150?

Depth-18inches
Width-12inches
Length-30inches

are you after it for coral's? are you bothered if it looks pretty?

What do you mean "after it for corals"? If you mean that I want it to keep corals then yes thats the reason. I don't want something I have to build myself because its going to turn out ugly.

EDIT: What do you mean by "are you bothered if it looks pretty"? lol I have no idea what your talking about. Unless pretty is a bad thing then I wouldn't be bothered if its pretty.

well the strength of lighting your gonna need is gonna depend on weather you keep corals or not.

well we've just got a bargain Metal Halide light, was about £100 with a decent bulb and it's a 250w single ended MH...... however it's not a proper aquarium light it's a security light so it's not the prettiest thing in the world, Ian's building a hood to mostly hide it. so if you want a nice pretty aquarium lumiere your gonna have to spend a bit, if you just want something to do the job but you don't mind what it looks like then your in business! :)

Yeah I saw this construction light at Home Depot and was wondering if my mom would let me drill it into the wall

...She said no.

ah, your probably gonna have to get a proper fishtank jobby then, gonna set you back a fair bit.

Ian had fun drilling into our walls for our new MH last night.... i wasn't worried at all..... honest :shifty:

100/150 bucks, eh? On lighting for a 30 gallon. If it were me I doubt I'd spend the cash for anything less than a 40 gallon tank (50 tall preferably same foot print as a 40 just taller). But since it's you and not me  . Spend the cash for a canopy and retro-fit Power Compacts. Since, you're going to want it under the budget look for a used canopy or used PC retro-fit. Going to need to replace the bulbs even if dude says "it's only been on for a week" (since people lie. Been watching "House" ).

If it were me I'd "building" a wooden canopy. Have the lumber yard rip the wood for you (most places charge like a buck a rip if you buy the wood there). Since, they do all the cuts for you all you need is a drill for a pilot holes for the screws and a bit of wood glue. A piano hinge so you can lift the top and feed (then again it's only 30 gallon so you can just lift it off or slide it a little).
