Eheim is meant to be very good (german efficiency for you), I've got a ProII that I've had for well over 6 years and have not had a single problem or noticed any degridation of any kind.

For cost though tetratec are very cheap for the preformance, some places you can get the top model for like £70 with all media/hoses which is very good value for money, though I'm not sure which brand is best on running cost.

anyone else? there's 1000's of members...more opinions plz to help all of us who are not too experienced w/canisters :S

I and perhaps many others would only have one or two brands of filter so couldnt answer the question, I have always stuck with Ehiems Pro2 and have no complaints about them, have one that is eight years old and still going strong.

I've found the rena xp filters to be quite cost effective and reliable. I have 3 XP2s, 2 XP3's and an XP4. I pretty much took the approach of "pick one and stick with it". I have found that to be good - it allows me to easily change filters without having to move hoses, etc. I suspect you will get a similar advantage if you go with any one of those filter lines.

When I first started buying them, they were pretty cheap, but lately they are not considerably cheaper than the others.
