My butterfly, combtail, and green bettas all have really bad ripped tails. I don't know why but they are split and look really gross. What is the fastest medication for healing them?

Very clean water, a little BettaMax, and foods high in protein for fin growth. I would avoid Melafix - trust me, I know first hand.

Edit: Most important - a bare tank. Even on gravel then can get their tailfins snagged.

Just keep the water clean. My big bossy female ripped the fins of one of the smaller ones and it healed overnight. Bigger tears will take a few days more. Bettas seem to have an amazing ability to regrow their fins. :D

I agree with Itty Bitty Betta very sound advice... bettamax works great for healing fins and encouraging their growth.

ya I use a LOT of stresscoat... not really working... I also use it as my dechlorinator.

Room temperature Poland Spring water. There's no substitute for fresh, clean water. Feed the betta well and the healing process will take care of itself.

Itty Bitty Betta is right. There is nothing as good as plenty of fresh clean water to heal ripped fins and many of the other things that can ail a fish.

But, be sure that it doesn't have a bacterial infection. Clean water will go a long way toward treating it, but I would use medication as well.

BettaMax or Kanacyn by Aquatronics are good choices, if that is the suspected cause, but those products are rapidly going off the shelves and might not be restocked. In that case, I would use KanaPlex by Seachem to treat bacterial infection. It is the same antibiotic as Kanacyn.

But, do not forget that clean fresh water and a consistent temperature, is important as a way to prevent disease, especially in uncycled tanks, but in cycled tanks too.

I agree wholeheartedly with clean water, and maybe a little stresscoat for tears. If the rip is really bad, then you can use some meds. And last time I used melafix things became worse because Blue got melafix burn on top of a ripped fin, so it took some fresh water and extra time to heal the poor guy. I only use meds if other fish have fin rot or if the rip doesn't improve over about two days.

I used some kanacyn on them just in case. I hear that the company that makes Kanacyn and Bettamax might be going out of business. Is this true?

Hi Auratus :)

I posted about that on this thread:

I haven't heard any news recently, but I have noticed that their products seem to be going down at the lfs i go to and not being restocked.

It's a shame.

BTW, I have found a good medication to take the place of Kanacyn. It's called KanaPlex by Seachem. It's the same antibiotic, Kanamycin.

Unfortunatly, I don't know what will take the place of BettaMax. :dunno:

Are there any natural "medications" for healing ripped fins?

I've heard of banana leaf and almond leaf (something like that) but do they work?
