Hi

I may be coming into a 4 foot tank however I have no space for it in my house.

Would it be possible for me to havbe a tropical set up out my back garden, or would it just be a disaster waiting to happen?

I think it would make a great feature , plus I could still give a some fish a loving home :)

it would work in an insulated shed but not out in the open. your heaters would be working on over drive and would not last long in my opinion.

crikey.. im just thinking about the heater needed in Dublin in February..

A very Bizarre question but I think it will have to be a big NO Im afraid....for more reasons that I can list.

Strange but nice idea though.....there is always space in the house for another tank.....and if there isnt.....make space.

I thought as much, is would be great though if it were possible.

Making space isn't as easy as you'd think, hence the Hex tall tank that I have now ... it's the only one that would fit!!

My girlfriend suggested mounting the new tank on a wall, but even then I'd be afraid that it'd be too heavy and would come down on the head of some unsuspecting fool (i.e. Me) one day. Supposedly it's 8.3 lbs per gallon of water and if that tank would be at least 50 gals then that's a fair bit of weight, we're talking at least 30 stone!!

I think that I may have to decline the offer of the free tank :(

You'd need an incredibly powerful heater, otherwise it'll just overheat and crack and electrocute you when you put your hand in the tank. Are you intending on putting it in a garage or somthing? The garage would have to be very well insulated.
Alot of rio and juwel aquariums come on tank stands which double up as cuboards, so you could just ditch any old cupords or small tables hanging around the house and use the tank stand cuboard instead, so not only do you have the same storage space as before but a tank that doesn't take up any extra as well  .

If you're going to do a tank outside I sure wouldn't use glass...

You would have to design a heat exchanger too.

If its free that makes it even harder to say no.....the only thing I turn down is my collar.

I wouldnt trust a shelf either but Im rubbish at D.I.Y.

Its a shame to turn down a good size tank.

My girlfriend told me when we bought our house a year ago I was only allowed one tank, no more than 3ft (she had no interest in fish keeping).....12 months on we have 5 in total with a 300ltr as the biggest, one of them (the original 3ft tank) is now hers with her coldwater fish.....not only does she LOVE fish keeping she has learned alot and is a member of this forum so you never know.

Tell me about it.

The choice I'm trying to make depends on the oul moola aspect too. The 4 footer is free, but is basically bare, just the tank and a stand. I'd have to buy a lid, heater and filter for it so that's be a fair bit I reckon. But would it be cheaper than buying a 2 foot (which we'd have a better chance of finding a place for) second hand tank with everything included ... probably so. Which makes the whole thing more frustrating!!

Bid Mick, you must watch tv while sitting on a fish tank. How many extensions did you have to build to get all of those bad boys in??

I think this option is a no. Everybody before me has done well enough explaining why so I won't repeat it all again.

Maybe you could build a pond instead? If digging isn't an option, why not a raised one :)

pretty much, we have 3 in our living room, one in the spare room and one in our room....the smallest is a 50ltr and the biggest (so far) is a 300ltr, we aim to move again soon so that we can have a fish room or have a big double garage like my inlaws.

When we get a bigger place (as we fopund out last week my wife is expecting our first baby :D ) I want to turn the 300ltr into marine and custom build a 8ft x 3ft x 3ft......a year ago my wife would have laughed at the very idea but now she cant wait.
