I think that they are just exploring their boundries when going to the surface. as for the second question

That thingy in the first snail is a uhm, sort of a lung they have, a mantle cavity. They go up, take air in there, go back down and do the snaily stuff, use the oxygen and go back up, let out the old air and take fresh air in.

Great pics! I often sit and watch my snail, it's pretty awesome! I find they're highly comical (I know it's hard to believe) actually.

on the topic of... um... mating. lol. how can you tell what sex a snail is? I have two in different tanks, and will soon be combining the tanks. I'd be cool if they mated, but obviously only if one's a girl and one's a boy

i think it depends on what kinda snail you have. I always wondered if mine was a boy or a girl...i wonder how they'd know. maybe they dont' until they climb onto the other one and then suddenly realize: "oh crap sorry, ur a guy too"

I know that apple snails has separated sexes. Some snails are hermaphroditic.

Apple Snails lay there eggs above the water line.

Thanks for that site. It was very informative. I was able to take a lot from it, and hopefully I'll be able to find out wether or not my snails might mate!
