What Are My German Blue Rams Doing?

ThepairofGBRs.jpg
Well they are both female by the looks of it Both pink belly's which is a huge distinguishing mark on females. Males don't have this. and you asked why has the black band come and gone? it shows submission to the dominant fish. My Fry act the same way, theres 2 which are dominant and have the one black spot with iridescent's all around. and the rest have black bands on there body's with little iridescent's showing..

Forgot to add but a lot of female rams now are getting the 2 elongated spins on there dorsal fins which is normally a male trait. in the Photo are my pair male in the background with no pink on his belly. also you can see the females elongated dorsal spines.

anyways hope this helps good luck finding a pair :).

Video is really hard to see but, no they don't look like both females, one looks male and the other female.

Like other people said, probably pairing up.

Good luck with them.

On a second look they may actually be both females. The one of them is definitley female though, but at parts the other looks to have a pink belly, and at other times it doesn't. Would it be possible to get higher quality photos or videos of them? That's really the one way to be 100% sure.

Its gonna be hard to tell until they both get their breeding colours - then if you see 2 pink bellies you will know for sure. You cant go by the courtship thing because you can get 2 females go through the whole process of courtship and egg laying and defending the eggs as though they were male and female ! I did tell you they are complex little personalities didnt I ?

Are you sure they are Male and Female?

Yes one has a constant bright pink belly, and is always bright coloured, the other (male) isn't so bright, but gets reall bright somtimes and gets a pink belly just abit duller.

Would they still stay by there eggs 24/7 even though there are no other fish in the tank?

yes they will, they will even try and scare you off if you go too close!

Lol, atm all they do is beg from me. My male has recovered loads from yesterday and has not wondered off behind the filter. That sponge done the job :good:

The parents would guard the eggs and fry 24/7. Sounds like you have two females to me as the males don't get a pink belly

Wow, its because there is so much color difference in them, and I got told by several people I have a m & f. Will I have problems if they are 2 females, or will they live happily together?

If the 'male' is also showing a pink tummy, even if its not constant, then yes you have two female, sometimes they do go thru the spawning ritual together, but obviously nothing will come of it.

Two female will be fine in that tank, you could if you really wanted to, find a male, but that doesnt guarantee a pair and you may have to rehome the odd female if a pair do form.

The dominant female is obviously the one who has the consistantly pink tummy.
