So, I was sitting in my desk chair yesterday morning, when i heard the filter in my 60L tank making a lot of noise. I turned around to see a waterfall cascading down the front of the draws it was sat on. Luckily i had a 40L bucket laying around so was able to save most of the water and all of the fish and shrimp. Long story short the bottom pane in the tank had cracked. The insurance company wouldn't cover it, so we decided to fork out £200 on a Fluval Roma 90 tank and cabinet (because the water had ruined the old cabinet). The one plus point is I've only just returned from a weeks holiday, so thankfully it happened when i was in the flat.

Oh well! first world problems and all.

Oh that's terrible!  But as you said, luckily happened when you were there.....

Sorry about your tank, but at least you managed to save everyone, including the shrimp :good:

Yeah, the consequences could have been far worse

To be honest, the shrimp didn't seem like they wanted to be saved, they're very good at climbing out of nets!

Horrible to hear that sort of thing happening.

Indeed, very lucky timing that you were at the right place at the right time to be able to save all your fish and shrimps :)

Look on the bright side, you now have a bigger tank! :)

In fact your Roma 90 is the exact same model as mine, although I had decided external filter was the way to go. Would recommend doing this as the Fluval Filter does its job perfectly well but a bit bulky and an eyesore inside the tank IMO!

Hope you enjoy your new tank and your shrimp and fish enjoy the extra swimming room! ;)

I'm using my old filter for the moment, seeing that it's cycled and is made for a 90L anyway, the Fluval i shall sell. I'm not a fan of Fluval filters, i also have a roma 200 and the filter in that used to dump most of it's contents when i removed it, so i replaced that with an external. I have the same plan for the 90L, but spousal acceptance is a factor that might prevent it for a bit!

So now would be a good time to think of why it cracked - are you aware of the base rules of fish tanks? Floating bases do not need polystyrene but flat bottomed tanks do?
Ignore me if you are well aware of these precautions but it'd be interesting to know why it broke?

Sophie, that's true, I never thought to ask that...

Well, first of all it was an 8 year old tetra aqua-art that my girlfriend has had for years. Might be hard to see in the picture but it's a floating base. We think the set of drawers(from ikea) it was set on has warped and put extra stress on the glass, which caused it. Which is why we decided to buy a proper fish tank stand this time.

Yeah I couldn't decipher the picture so that's why I asked - I reckon that's a more than feasible reason, as nice as IKEA can be it is a load of tack! My house is full of IKEA rickety furniture aha. The cabinet for the Fluval Roma tanks are amazing - I'd second them to Juwel in first place. I have two Romas and find them fabulous! :good:

Oh boy, this causes nightmare visions in my mind!
