Hey I am looking to buy a air pump for my aquarium but I'm unsure about which one to get, so I was wondering if someone on here could help me out.

My tank is between: 39.5L - 45L...

Generally, people on the forum will say you don't need one if you have good agitation of the water's surface.

Otherwise, whispers are supposedly good. Typically air pumps come in boxes so you can usually get the LFS employee (if you find the right employee and ask nicely) to plug them in and see how noisy they are.

The other thing is smaller pumps are almost always quieter than a big pump of the same kind.

ok thanks... i think i will get one, just to be on the safe side, as we have hard water around here.

I have one of those newer Whisper pumps on those rubber legs, it was made for a ten gallon aquarium. One thing I noticed was that it will run perfectly fine in deep 50 to 70 gallon aquariums, and any other pump that I had would not do as well.

What ever you do, don't go for cheapest. I originally bought the cheapest on the had and is was so noisy it would raise the dead. If it had been on a tank in the bedroom, you would not have been able to sleep. It was bad just in the living room where we were watching TV. I took it back and swapped it for a Rena air pump and they are dead quiet. I now have 4 but never use them except for on rare ocassions. As mentioned, they aren't necessary as a general rule.

I also have a 10 gal rated air pump on a 75 gal tank. I originally put one rated for that sized tank, but it was waaaay too loud for me.
