My new little boy, "Snowball" is absolutely the most gorgeous white HM -- he's probably 6 mos. old now, but hasn't flared yet--any idea when they flare? Maybe he doesn't have "flarers?"

If he didnt have his so called flarers he would most probably be dead as they are his gill covers :p and they can flare from 3 months-ish on really. they can try and flare before that but it doesnt really work bless em LOL

I think some fish just don't flare. Bill doesn't, either. But have you tried showing him a mirror?

oh boy, what a dummie I feel like! Of course I KNEW THAT, since I just lost my first betta not too long ago, and now that you mention it--his gills were where he flares - duh!

maybe he's younger than I thought--he's pretty small.

I will try that--thx!

They can flare as young as 3 weeks old if they are extra punky

Some aren't as agressive as others and don't flare at all. Nothing to worry about he sounds happy enough :D

wow, at 3 weeks? I'd be a little disappointed if he never flared--seems like that's a betta trademark, you know? But he is very active and very adorable, fearless actually--my last betta was pretty timid, but then again, he'd been disrupted a lot when I used to do water changes that required netting him, and placing him in another container. He hated that. Then I moved him into his own 5 gallon tank. But he was a huge flaring boy!
