under ideal conditions 10 years plus.
Fish age slower at cooler temperatures so if they are kept in really warm water they won't live as long.

is there anthing i can do that would help him

just keep the water quality good and offer him a varied diet.

thats a problem as he doesnt move about the tank at all he stays in the same kind of spot near enough except from wriggling about
he is usually lying on his back and sometimes flips over again.
he think he is just way past retiremnt at nearly 12 years old. is there anything i can do that wuld maybe bring him back to life a bit as he has been like this for about 1-2 months now and doesnt really eat at all just the stones on bottom of tank grazing algae.
?????

sounds like his time is almost up. He's probably waiting for a big fish to come and eat him so he can go to the big fish pond up in the sky.

i know your probably right he has gave birth up to hundreds of babies over the years

but i wouldnt kill him myself i think its best to just let him pass away himself do you think?

yep, just let him be for the time being. When he stops feeding on the gravel and doesn't bother to flip back over onto his stomach then it will be time to put him to sleep.
